Real-time monitoring on the shopfloor used to be a luxury. In 2026, it's the default. The question isn't whether to capture real-time signals from the line — it's what to do with them so they actually improve operations rather than overwhelm the team.

Plants that get value share a discipline about three things: what to watch, what counts as an exception, and who acts on it.

Most dashboards watch the wrong things. Walk into a plant control room and you'll see a dashboard with twelve to twenty live tiles: line speed, throughput, OEE, top defect codes. It looks comprehensive. It's mostly attention-poison. The problem isn't the metrics — it's that everything is shown all the time, with the same visual weight. The operator's eye has nowhere to land.

Define the exception with the same rigor as the metric. For each metric you're tempted to show in real time, force three answers. What threshold triggers attention? Who, specifically, gets the alert? What are they expected to do in the next five minutes? If you can't answer the third question, don't put it on the dashboard. It's noise. Most plants find that out of twenty live tiles, three actually pass this filter.

The signal you want is contextual, not just temporal. Real-time matters less than people think. Contextual matters more. A spike in changeover time is one data point. A spike in changeover time, on third shift, on the new fixture, with a new operator on station, is a signal that implies an answer. Spend less effort shaving seconds off latency, more on attaching context.

Match the cadence to the role. Operators need immediate, in-step feedback at the station. Supervisors need a near-real-time view of where the line is right now. Plant managers need a daily and weekly view of what's drifting. Mixing these is a common error. Plant managers staring at second-by-second dashboards make jumpy decisions. Operators given weekly trend charts ignore them.

Close the loop between the signal and the workflow. The most important thing to do with a real-time signal isn't to show it — it's to act on it through a workflow someone owns. When the line stops, the system shouldn't only flash red. It should route an event into a defined response: who's responsible, what they look at first, what the operator does while they wait.

Real-time monitoring without a tied workflow is observation. With it, it's operation. A simple test: when the dashboard turns red, does someone act in the next five minutes? If yes, the monitoring is doing work. If no, it's theatre.
